Planning a Small-Business Interview Show

Most interview shows that fade out do so because nobody decided what the show was for. A one-page plan before the first recording fixes that.

What you are making

A podcast is a programme published in digital form for listeners to download or stream at a time that suits them. Most are distributed through an RSS feed, a standard format that lets listening apps check automatically for new episodes.

Write the one-page plan

  • Who listens. Owners of small shops? Freelancers? People thinking of starting a business? Pick one.
  • What they get. A practical lesson, an honest story, or both.
  • Who you interview. Define the kind of guest, not a wish list of famous names.
  • How often. Choose a pace you can keep when you are busy, not when you are excited.

Choose a format

A single long conversation, a short interview plus a host summary, or a themed series with several guests. Each needs different preparation. Try one and keep it for a while before changing.

Record a pilot

Interview a friend who runs a business. You will learn more about your questions, your equipment and your editing from one honest pilot than from any planning document, this one included.

Next: booking and preparing guests.
