Recording on a Small Budget
Listeners forgive a plain studio but not bad sound. Most improvements come from the room and microphone technique, not from expensive equipment.
The microphone
A microphone is a transducer that turns sound into an electrical signal. For voice recording in an ordinary room, a microphone that picks up mostly what is directly in front of it, held at a steady distance from the mouth, usually sounds better than a sensitive one that hears the whole room.
The room matters more
- Record in a small room with soft furnishings: curtains, a sofa, a rug, a full bookshelf.
- Avoid bare walls, tiled kitchens and large empty spaces, which add echo.
- Switch off fans, fridges and notifications.
Plosives
A pop filter is a screen placed in front of the microphone to reduce popping sounds from the bursts of air in letters such as "p" and "b". Speaking slightly across the microphone rather than straight into it also helps.
Remote guests
Where possible, ask each person to record their own audio locally as well as on the call, and combine the files afterwards. Ask guests to wear headphones so the call does not echo.
Always record a backup
A second recorder or a phone running in the room has saved many episodes. Check levels with a short test recording before every session.
